JUST A LITTLE BIT OF CHARCOAL
If anyone wants charcoal we can process a few sets at a time. Any more requires a longer wait. Each piece must be wrapped in plastic bubble paper then a new box ordered then packed and shipped. We have not been able to figure out the cost exactly yet. We also do not know how this will hold up in shipping, but it probably should. The precise problem is that when the charcoal is cooked the bark and core seperate so there are spaces between them. The bark is softer and much easier to break. However the bark is necessary for your fire as it catches fire more easily and acts as a starter thus insuring a healthy fire.
We are working seriously on the problem. e-mail for details if you really need it before the next update!!

MM02 CHARCOAL FOR TOBAKOBON HIIRE - TOBAKOBON SUMI
The real stuff, cut into ready to use cylenders. Ten pieces per pack. Charcoal is proving to be our biggest problem. We do not want it to break and we do not want it to be too expensive. We think this will work but there may be some breakage. Box of 10.

OKIRO 10 bags
BINKAKE (for tetsubin) 6 bags
FURO (brazier) 15 bags
RO (hearth) 18 bags
The less expensive hearth (ro) and brazier (furo) ash is rougher than the more expensive fine ashes. Ash must be washed and rewashed, dried and sieved to different degrees for different finesses. The amount of waste is considerable between the coarser and the finer ash.
Brazier (furo) ash comes in coarse and fine. The much less expensive coarse ash is used to almost fill the brazier (furo) then the more expensive ash is used on top so that making the higata shape is easier. Of course, over the season these ashes mix and new fine ash is needed. Possibly the less expensive ash will do when making the higata shape. There is a slight difference in color between these ash types.
The less expensive hearth (ro) ash is used to fill the hearth. The finer hearth ash (shimeshibai) is used in the temai and one bag of this should go a long way. There is also a slight difference in colors.
Next addition- I will include ash washing directions and possibly ash making directions or those in the country.
