FUKUSA-BASAMI
All of the Women's Fukusa-basami fabric designs shown below come from the Shoshoin collection, at Todaiji temple or the Horyuji temple, in Nara. These designs were brought to Japan from China in the Nara Period ( 646-794 AD). Frankly they were choosen because they are appropriate and available year round.
There are at least 20,000 designs and variations of fabrics, including the original Chinese and those which are native Japanese designs (both are called 'meibutsu-gire') that are acceptable for Tea. The number of weavers in the Nishijin district of Kyoto, where these are woven, are not so numerous that this variety of designs can be continuously woven. The weavers change patterns about every six months and the time between weaving the same pattern is long. We have many varieties in stock but we never know how long they will be available. If you have a special request, please e-mail me and I will check.
The colors and designs of the fabrics will vary a little. They all look better than my pictures.

These plastic cases are used to hold a damp hemp cloth (chakin) used by guests for wiping the lip of the bowl used for thick tea. They prevent the other items in your bag from getting wet as well as keeping the cloth fresh and clean.
SWEET PICKS
The choice between metal or plastic is one of aesthetics. As far as Tea is concerned either is OK. The sleeves are the same for both. We are given no control over design. Give us an idea of what you would like and we will try to match it from our available selection.
