When matcha tea first came to Japan in 1192 from China, the utensils used in the Zen monistaries to make it for the monks and visitors came with it. This was the brazier (furo) so the brazier reigned supreme until the mid 1500's when Rikyu more or less brought the (ro) hearth as we know it today into being. Therefore, the brazier may be used all year long and with it, the lacquer ( or other material) kogo. These lacquered kogo may also be used with the hearth and kneaded neriko, as long as a leaf (camilia is standard but any non-poisonous green leaf is ok) is placed under the neriko.
The following five incense containers are lacquer painted with powdered gold (makie) and mother of pearl. They are made by Hasegawa Yusai and have the same dimensions, 6 cm. across and 2 cm. thick. They are appropriate for the Brazier (furo). These are not one of a kind pieces so the design may vary slightly.
