Gold gourds were Hideyoshi's battle ornament. "Sennari hyotan" means One makes a thousand gourds. Six gourds is a rebus for "no silkiness."

This blue kochi ware interlocking ring cutout design is based on one of the "seven treasures" from China. It was originally based on a Chinese coin which is round with a square hole.
