MIZUTSUGI |
There are two types of water replinishers. One is the ceramic Katakuchi based on a bentwood prototype, with handle and spout. The other is the metal Koshiguro made of tinned copper, which was originally used outdoors for heating the water over an open fire, thus the "blackened bottom". One variation used by Omote Senke has no lid on the spout because Rikyu's had already lost it. The Urasenkei one, used by Sotan, was "newer" and the spout had the lid still attached.

KOSHI GURO MIZUTSUGI
A real handmade one of these is an incredible piece of metal art. Japanese raisers do not start from sheet stock but from an ingot of copper to make one of these. The spout is formed from the ingot as well making it a one piece item. Of course the lids and handle are made seperatly. The coloring is very carefully controled and done by hand. I can get one of these for you, if you want. (it's over 200,000 yen.) The time and skill required to make this toy is amazing! This is quite an evolutionary step for a pot that was used to heat water on a fire outside.
Now the normal ones you get may or may not be cooper, probably spun with the spout soldered on - like the one we have.
No detail on this one. Made of copper.
