CHASEN - TEA WHISK

Rikyu said, " The chasen, chakin, ... as well as your heart should be new."

These toys come in all sizes and shapes with different colored strings and different thicknesses of tines.We offer four basic types. If you have a special request e-mail me and I can get it for you. (allow up to 2 months notice)

The ones we sell are of Japanese manufacture (as compared to Korean, Chinese or South East Asian) and are the ones we feel will stay nice the longest. It is highly recommended that you get either the ceramic or wood whisk form ( chasen naoshi). When you wash the whisk then put it on the form to dry the shape will last longer. Japanese chasen are because of the bamboo used and the way they are made. Good tea whisks are curled by hand, the same way that ribbon is curled with a scissor blade. Many others available are soaked in hot water and then machine pressed into shape. The tines relax and straighten after one use.

A new chasen is required for every chaji and chakai, in Japan. After that, they may be used for class, for your own pleasure, for making hot chocolate, etc. One use for worn out chasen is for cleaning the spine of fish after gutting. Cut all but about 3 cm. of the tines off then use the stubb to whisk the fish spine clean.

KAISHI - SWEET PAPERS

We offer three types of kaishi. The green package in the photo are for men, the red one for women and the third has glassine layers to go between the papers. New packs are de riguer for guests at chaji and chakai. The come in packs of 5.

Sticks for Sweets or Food - Kuromoji

These are for serving and eating sweets for Tea but could also be used for serving food and the smaller ones make nice skewers.

Number G05 are standard for Urasenke.

G06 are for smaller sweet bowls.

G07 are for Omote Senke

G08 are the standard size used for formal tea gatherings with a fuchidaka (chaji). One is given to each guest to take home as the only tangible "souvenir" of the event.

The smallest ones can be used for informal gatherings (chakai) or for party foods.

G08 & G09 come in 20 per box. G10, G11 & G13 come in 30 per box.

All of these should be soaked before use.

YAHAZU & RIKYU-BASHI

Yahazu are short serving chopsticks with a cut that resembles an arrow notch; used only on small vessels. The ordinary green bamboo chopsticks used for Urasenke style tea are too large for small cup sized vessels!

Rikyu-bashi are the standard cedar chopsticks used for formal and informal tea gatherings. Normally they are used once and discarded. Since we do a lot of tea gatherings I have a huge box of these that are used for everyday eating and regular parties. These soft wood chopsticks are perfect for food as they are soft but strong and feel comfortable on the lips and teeth.

They come 10 pairs to the bag.
