SWEETS for GREEN TEAS

Tea without sweets is good but still a few dance steps from ecstasy . Living in Kyoto, the selection is beyond imagination. Walking from shop to shop, I have spent months thinking about what could be made available. Below is a simple selection that is sort of long lasting and will tend not to break in shipment but definately taste good.

The following pictured sweets come from Shioyoshi-ken. This old Kyoto shop is famous for its higashi, or dry sweets. Their flavors are perfectly matched for green teas, whipped or not.


This Senbei, a cross between a cracker and a cookie, is delicatly flavored with soy sauce, glazed with sugar and branded with the symbol of flowing water.

The brand changes periodically to fit the season in Japan. If yours is not water, the name will be sent with the order.

These come in packs of 12 senbei.

These pressed and dried sweets are 100% pure Wasambo, a hand made sugar from south Japan. As they get older they get harder but the taste is always good! These are only available when they are in season in Japan. I do not have precise dates when the changeovers occur.

From left to right : Spring - Summer - Autumn - Winter

SPRING : Yellow Butterflies, Pink Plum Flowers, and (greener than they appear in the picture) Bracken Fern sprouts.

SUMMER : Pinks (Nadeshiko), Blue Water (kanze mizu) - Maple Leaves.

AUTUMN : Chrysanthemum, Chestnut, and Red Maple Leaf.

Winter* Plum flower, Narcissus, and fukuju-so ( a snow blooming "Grass of Prosperity and Long Life)

These dry pressed sweets are also 100% wasambo. They are pure white. The designs may change from year to year. This set are always pressed from the oldest molds in the shop.
